Ask the contractor for references and more importantly if you can take a look at recent projects in person. It is important to look and see if they are good at paying attention to details and perform high quality work.

Scheduling is also an important factor in evaluating a contractor. If they can start a very large project immediately it can be an indication that they are not running a good house remodeling business with repeat customers. If they can't start your large home remodeling project for a very long time (over 6 months) it may indicate they are not efficient at scheduling and managing their projects.
